Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Can I rent a MacBook within the UK as a private individual?
My laptop (PC not Mac) crashed and it will cost upwards of £250 to get it fixed and even then I'll have lost most of my files, (and yes I will back up my files next time although I'm more annoyed by having to use my mothers laptop for everything and by the loss of internet than the loss of my files) I have decided to cut my losses because of the cost of a partial repair and the sheer weight of my computer and the lack of a webcam. I was going to just buy a MacBook Pro but because a Mac Compatible BluRay player has been developed (google for info) I am reluctant to spend roughly £1500 on a laptop only to have to sell it 3 years (or less) later. I thought about buying a 'new' one off ebay but it wouldn't be that less expensive than a brand new one and I'd like the security of buying one from the Mac cathedral or other official seller thus avoiding the well we can't/won't help you, you shouldn't have bought it off ebay. And even if I did decide to buy one and sell it if and when a BluRay compatible MacBook comes out it really is more hassle than I want to deal with. Therefore I would really like to rent a MacBook, however although any search for MacBook rental brings up loads of results they all state that they cannot hire laptops to 'private individuals' My mother does have a company that I could use to pretend that I'm hiring the laptop for, but I wouldn't want to get in trouble and I don't like being dishonest. Please help me out! Oh yeah and I would prefer to rent a Pro and from a company offering free delivery and pickup but these points aren't essential.

  2. QUESTION:
    Online movie rental for Mac?
I'm looking for a website like Netflix where I can rent movies and watch them online that will work for a macbook pro. suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
I don't know of any other websites other than Netflix, but this is what they had to say on the subject:

"Beginning on Oct 27, 2008, we deployed a test of an instant watching player for Apple Macintosh computers with Intel CPUs. This player uses Microsoft Silverlight technology. We expect to deploy this player to all subscribers by the end of 2008.

Until we deploy the Silverlight based Mac player more broadly, members with Intel-based Macintosh computers can watch instantly using Boot Camp, Parallels, or Fusion to run Windows."

So hopefully it will be available soon.

  3. QUESTION:
    iTunes Movie Rental HELP?
So I decided to rent 'The Godfather: Coppola Restoration' on my Macbook Pro 13". I let it download overnight because the 48 hour time limit only starts when you click play. The next day I sit down to watch it on my laptop, an authorisation message comes up asking for my password. It says the computer is already authorised and procedes to the movie screen.
The screen is just black- no matter how far I go into the movie it's a black screen. What's wrong with it? Any (quick) help would be much appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
It hasn't been implemented for all movies yet (even the ones that show up in the "Top Rentals" list). Wait another day or two for the implementation.

Some movies do work right now though. For instance, "Ratatouille" is available for rent right now, as are a few other movies. "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" is another.

Here's a little tip: In the "Search" bar on the upper-right hand screen, type in the name of any movie.

      Hit Enter.

Now, on the page that comes up, look on the upper-left part of the screen for a drop down box and the words "Power Search".

      Click "Power Search".

On the new page that comes up, look again for the drop-down box and click it.

      Choose the "Movies" option.

Near the top of the screen will be a box next to the phrase "Search movies that are available for rental".

      Click in that box.

Click the "Search" button on the upper-right.

The list that comes up gives you a list of rental movies. Note that some of those movies still don't have the rental feature added, but you get a good look at the movies you'll be able to rent in the next few days.

Still, some of those are available for rent, so check 'em out. Apple should have this fixed up soon. I know it's tough to be patient, but I guess we're gonna have to.
